Example

$78. 40 bill + 18% tip - $14. 11 tip, total $92. 51, $46. 26 each (2 people)

Formula

Tip Amount = Bill × (Tip % / 100)

Total Bill = Bill + Tip Amount. Per Person = Total Bill / Number of People.

Tip is almost always calculated on the pre-tax subtotal for fairness.

FAQ

What is a standard tip percentage in the US?

15–20% is standard for good restaurant service. 18% is common default on bills. 10% for poor service, 25%+ for exceptional.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Pre-tax is traditional and most fair. Many receipts now auto-calculate on pre-tax subtotal.
